Mouth ulcers concerns

Mouth ulcers are painful sores that appear in the mouth, usually on the soft tissue - cheeks, lips or tongue. They can be white, red, yellow or grey in colour and swollen.

Although they're uncomfortable, mouth ulcers are usually harmless and clear up by themselves within a week or two.

In many cases, the reason for mouth ulcers is unclear, but triggers are thought to include:

  • Accidentally biting the inside of your cheek or a sharp tooth
  • Poorly fitting dentures
  • Hard food
  • A defective filling
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Hormonal changes – some women develop mouth ulcers during their monthly period
  • Eating certain foods – such as chocolate, spicy foods, coffee, peanuts, almonds, strawberries, cheese, tomatoes and wheat flour
  • Toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulphate
  • Stopping smoking – when you first stop smoking, you may develop mouth ulcers
  • Viral infections – including the cold sore virus, chickenpox, and hand, foot and mouth disease
  • Medical conditions - including vitamin B12 or iron deficiency, Crohn's disease, coeliac disease, reactive arthritis, HIV, lupus, Behçet’s disease
  • Certain medications or medical treatments may also cause mouth ulcers

It's usually safe to treat mouth ulcers at home to help reduce swelling and ease any discomfort.

Self care

Tips for easing discomfort and aid healing…

  • Antimicrobial mouthwash or protective paste, available from your pharmacist
  • Use a soft toothbrush to brush your teeth
  • Use a toothpaste that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulphate, as this may be irritating
  • Avoid hard, spicy, salty, acidic or hot food and drink until the ulcer heals
  • Use a straw to drink cool drinks
  • Avoid things that may be triggering your mouth ulcers

Mouth ulcers can sometimes be a possible symptom of a more serious problem such as infection or mouth cancer. It's therefore essential that you contact Transform Smiles as soon as possible if you notice:

  • Your mouth ulcer has lasted three or more weeks
  • You keep getting mouth ulcers
  • Your mouth ulcer becomes more painful or red

I was very apprehensive about having a lower denture, but Andrew and Daniel did a great job. I hardly know I have a denture and would recommend Transform Smiles to anyone.

I had an issue and needed advice, I was booked in for an appointment immediately. The treatment was routine for them and they managed to get me sorted within 20 minutes while still offering support, answering questions, worries. I am a nervous patient, and it has taken me 4 visits to get to know them and they have been very kind, non-judgmental and supportive.

Personal, helpful guidance through the treatment process, which didn't feel rushed.Time was taken to ask my questions and offer reassurance over any concerns I had.

Every time I have visited this Dentist, I have come away after treatment and felt that I was well informed of the treatment I was about to receive and well looked after.

Wow, that's all I can say, Harry was amazing from the time we meet him. My daughter has special needs and I was a bit worried on how all the treatment would go.. well he was so patient and kind, made her feel at ease. She had teeth taken out, and she didn't feel a thing. So happy that we found Harry, she didn't need to have impressions either as he had a special scanner.. which made things easier for her.. thank you Harry for being so kind. Also Veronica you fitted us and made us feel welcome, thank you Fiona

Receptionist was very nice, all dental work was carried out very professionally. The room and equipment was spotlessly clean, both the dentist and dental nurse were very nice and kind. They kept checking i was ok, talked me through it, stopped to listen and gave me breaks, fitted me in on the day and patched up another tooth when i asked them. I was very happy when i left and everybody was so nice, i can’t thank them enough.

The care and understanding were above anything else I’ve ever experienced before. Everything was explained so clearly and I felt completely at ease and comfortable. I cannot thank Daniel enough for his level of care.
